As a parent of a child with profound hearing loss, I have made it my goal to empower parents of children with special needs. We strive to work with families through a unique approach to education law called “person centered” representation.
Traditional law firms and advocacy groups will treat the child/parent as a “client” with the belief that their sole purpose is to remedy the legal issue presented. This is referred to as “client” based representation. However, we believe that most appropriate form of representation when dealing with an education or civil rights issue is a “person centered” approach. Our sole purpose is not to just handle your education and/or civil rights issue but also to help empower you the parent.
Person centered representation is a principle based approach to education law built around the concept of effectiveness. In this context, effectiveness means the capacity of the asset to continue to produce the desired result. We believe that the greatest asset a child has is the family unit. Thus, in order to provide effective representation it is imperative to teach families how to recognize issues and advocate for their children. Through the “person centered” approach you take on an active role in learning the laws that affect your child. You will help develop strategies for success. As the parent, you understand the needs of your child better than anyone else. This understanding when combined with the necessary legal knowledge results in an empowered individual.
Our firm understands that a child with special needs will continue to face new challenges as they grow and develop. It is essential for us as parents to be able to learn to respond appropriately when things do change. We are committed to providing quality representation for children and their families. Daniel R. Shaw, Esq.
